NONFICTION BOOK REVIEWS #2020-017 - Church

CHURCH IS NOT A WHAT IT IS A WHO

As we grow up, on Sundays, many of us go to church. When we move to a new community, we get asked, “Have you decided to what church you’re going to go to for services?” The only problem is, which I discovered later in life, that a church is not a what, it is instead a who. A church is not an edifice; it’s people like you and me. If you’ve any doubts, then consider this; a fire tragedically destroys a church, and after that, no matter where the congregation goes to hold their services, they still call themselves whatever the church’s name had been.

If we look at ACTS 2:47 [ESV], we read:

“…praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
While in the KJV and NKJV, “their number” is replaced by the word “church.”

I’m grateful that the author, Martin Murphy, has chosen to write this book in his usual clear-cut manner that everyone can readily understand. The chief desire Mr. Murphy had in writing this book is because of his wanting Christians who are openly acknowledging their faith in the Lord to comprehend/appreciate what they’re getting themselves into in regards to who these individuals are within the group they’ve chosen to be part of, or in other words the church of their choosing.

There’s a lot that needs to be learned by these Christians as it pertains to the spiritual nature, the calling, devotion, and, more importantly, the church’s ministry and unity of the collective membership. The collective membership needs to agree on the fundamental doctrine of their group [church]; otherwise chaos might ensue causing their group to falter.

For wanting all Christians to understand the true meaning of “church” and reach their full potential of being part of it, I’ve given Mr. Murphy the 5 STARS he has gotten for his endeavor here.
